Active cases of rare diseases have been reported to CWSHIN (in October, November):
- A case of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) in MB,
- A case of Porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) in MB. However, PDCoV is not consistently reported.
- A case of Seneca Valley Virus (SVV) in MB – the first outside assembly yards in western Canada
High-traffic sites (assembly yards) are high-risk of contamination with Coronavirus and Seneca Valley Virus.
Any contact (vehicles etc.) with high-traffic sites is a risk for spreading diseases. All possible biosecurity measures should be applied and adhered to.
Sufficient (anecdotal) evidence is building to conclude that extreme care with biosecurity is critical when manure is being spread in the area.
Practical tips
Scours in young pigs is known to be the most frequent health problem. It is complex and with many factors that have a role – from management and feed to infectious diseases both viral (such as Rotavirus, PED, or SVV) and bacterial (such as E coli or Salmonella).
Therefore, if you see scours call your herd veterinarian for an investigation.
Blisters are reportable to the CFIA so if you see them call your herd veterinarian and make sure CFIA is notified
